Listen here: “Priority“
Deuteronomy 6:1-9; Mark 12:28-34
- Can hearing be commanded? I can tell you to listen, but I can’t make you do something. It’s a bit like commanding love.
- Love given in response to a command is not reciprocal love.
- When our children were small we would sometimes say, “Did you hear what I said?” It was more of a statement than a question. It means do you understand what I mean?
- Similarly, to hear God is not so much a mystical voice as it is an understanding of intent. To hear God is to understand what He means, to understand His Word, the Bible.
- John said that God so loved the world, defined as the inhabitants of the earth, the human family, the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of people alienated from God, and who are therefore hostile to the cause of Christ.
- God loves both believers and unbelievers. He loves everyone, but He holds those who love Him in return in a special relationship, a closer relationship.
