Genesis 16:1-16\u00a0 (New International Version)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n
Hagar and Ishmael<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

16 <\/strong>Now Sarai, Abram\u2019s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 <\/sup>so she said to Abram, \u201cThe Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 <\/sup>So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 <\/sup>He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.5 <\/sup>Then Sarai said to Abram, \u201cYou are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/sup>\u201cYour slave is in your hands,\u201d Abram said. \u201cDo with her whatever you think best.\u201d Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 <\/sup>And he said, \u201cHagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m running away from my mistress Sarai,\u201d she answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>Then the angel of the Lord told her, \u201cGo back to your mistress and submit to her.\u201d 10 <\/sup>The angel added, \u201cI will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/sup>The angel of the Lord also said to her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are now pregnant
    and you will give birth to a son.
You shall name him Ishmael,
    for the Lord has heard of your misery.
12 <\/sup>He will be a wild donkey of a man;
    his hand will be against everyone
    and everyone\u2019s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
    toward all his brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 <\/sup>She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: \u201cYou are the God who sees me,\u201d for she said, \u201cI have now seen the One who sees me.\u201d14 <\/sup>That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15\u00a0<\/sup>So Hagar\u00a0bore Abram a son,\u00a0and Abram gave the name Ishmael\u00a0to the son she had borne.\u00a016\u00a0<\/sup>Abram was eighty-six years old\u00a0when Hagar bore him Ishmael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
