Hosea 8-10  (English Standard Version)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

8 <\/span>Set the trumpet to your lips!<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>One like a vulture is over the house of the Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/span>
\nbecause they have transgressed my covenant<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and rebelled against my law.<\/span><\/span>
\n2 <\/sup>To me they cry,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>\u201cMy God, we\u2014Israel\u2014know you.\u201d<\/span><\/span>
\n3 <\/sup>Israel has spurned the good;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>the enemy shall pursue him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

4 <\/sup>They made kings, but not through me.<\/span>
\n    <\/span>They set up princes, but I knew it not.<\/span><\/span>
\nWith their silver and gold they made idols<\/span>
\n    <\/span>for their own destruction.<\/span><\/span>
\n5 <\/sup>I have spurned your calf, O Samaria.<\/span>
\n    <\/span>My anger burns against them.<\/span><\/span>
\nHow long will they be incapable of innocence?<\/span>
\n6 <\/sup>For it is from Israel;<\/span>
\na craftsman made it;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>it is not God.<\/span><\/span>
\nThe calf of Samaria<\/span>
\n    <\/span>shall be broken to pieces.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

7 <\/sup>For they sow the wind,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and they shall reap the whirlwind.<\/span><\/span>
\nThe standing grain has no heads;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>it shall yield no flour;<\/span><\/span>
\nif it were to yield,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>strangers would devour it.<\/span><\/span>
\n8 <\/sup>Israel is swallowed up;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>already they are among the nations<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>as a useless vessel.<\/span><\/span>
\n9 <\/sup>For they have gone up to Assyria,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>a wild donkey wandering alone;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>Ephraim has hired lovers.<\/span><\/span>
\n10 <\/sup>Though they hire allies among the nations,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>I will soon gather them up.<\/span><\/span>
\nAnd the king and princes shall soon writhe<\/span>
\n    <\/span>because of the tribute.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

11 <\/sup>Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>they have become to him altars for sinning.<\/span><\/span>
\n12 <\/sup>Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>they would be regarded as a strange thing.<\/span><\/span>
\n13 <\/sup>As for my sacrificial offerings,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>they sacrifice meat and eat it,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>but the Lord<\/span> does not accept them.<\/span><\/span>
\nNow he will remember their iniquity<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and punish their sins;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>they shall return to Egypt.<\/span><\/span>
\n14 <\/sup>For Israel has forgotten his Maker<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and built palaces,<\/span><\/span>
\nand Judah has multiplied fortified cities;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>so I will send a fire upon his cities,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>and it shall devour her strongholds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Lord<\/span> Will Punish Israel<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

9 <\/span>Rejoice not, O Israel!<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>Exult not like the peoples;<\/span><\/span>
\nfor you have played the whore, forsaking your God.<\/span>
\n    <\/span>You have loved a prostitute’s wages<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>on all threshing floors.<\/span><\/span>
\n2 <\/sup>Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and the new wine shall fail them.<\/span><\/span>
\n3 <\/sup>They shall not remain in the land of the Lord<\/span>,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>but Ephraim shall return to Egypt,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

4 <\/sup>They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord<\/span>,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and their sacrifices shall not please him.<\/span><\/span>
\nIt shall be like mourners’ bread to them;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>all who eat of it shall be defiled;<\/span><\/span>
\nfor their bread shall be for their hunger only;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>it shall not come to the house of the Lord<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

5 <\/sup>What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and on the day of the feast of the Lord<\/span>?<\/span><\/span>
\n6 <\/sup>For behold, they are going away from destruction;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>but Egypt shall gather them;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>Memphis shall bury them.<\/span><\/span>
\nNettles shall possess their precious things of silver;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>thorns shall be in their tents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

7 <\/sup>The days of punishment have come;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>the days of recompense have come;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>Israel shall know it.<\/span><\/span>
\nThe prophet is a fool;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>the man of the spirit is mad,<\/span><\/span>
\nbecause of your great iniquity<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and great hatred.<\/span><\/span>
\n8 <\/sup>The prophet is the watchman of Ephraim with my God;<\/span>
\nyet a fowler’s snare is on all his ways,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and hatred in the house of his God.<\/span><\/span>
\n9 <\/sup>They have deeply corrupted themselves<\/span>
\n    <\/span>as in the days of Gibeah:<\/span><\/span>
\nhe will remember their iniquity;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>he will punish their sins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

10 <\/sup>Like grapes in the wilderness,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>I found Israel.<\/span><\/span>
\nLike the first fruit on the fig tree<\/span>
\n    <\/span>in its first season,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>I saw your fathers.<\/span><\/span>
\nBut they came to Baal-peor<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>and became detestable like the thing they loved.<\/span><\/span>
\n11 <\/sup>Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird\u2014<\/span>
\n    <\/span>no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!<\/span><\/span>
\n12 <\/sup>Even if they bring up children,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>I will bereave them till none is left.<\/span><\/span>
\nWoe to them<\/span>
\n    <\/span>when I depart from them!<\/span><\/span>
\n13 <\/sup>Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.<\/span><\/span>
\n14 <\/sup>Give them, O Lord<\/span>\u2014<\/span>
\n    <\/span>what will you give?<\/span><\/span>
\nGive them a miscarrying womb<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and dry breasts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

15 <\/sup>Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>there I began to hate them.<\/span><\/span>
\nBecause of the wickedness of their deeds<\/span>
\n    <\/span>I will drive them out of my house.<\/span><\/span>
\nI will love them no more;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>all their princes are rebels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

16 <\/sup>Ephraim is stricken;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>their root is dried up;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>they shall bear no fruit.<\/span><\/span>
\nEven though they give birth,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>I will put their beloved children to death.<\/span><\/span>
\n17 <\/sup>My God will reject them<\/span>
\n    <\/span>because they have not listened to him;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>they shall be wanderers among the nations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

10 <\/span>Israel is a luxuriant vine<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>that yields its fruit.<\/span><\/span>
\nThe more his fruit increased,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>the more altars he built;<\/span><\/span>
\nas his country improved,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>he improved his pillars.<\/span><\/span>
\n2 <\/sup>Their heart is false;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>now they must bear their guilt.<\/span><\/span>
\nThe Lord<\/span> will break down their altars<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and destroy their pillars.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

3 <\/sup>For now they will say:<\/span>
\n    <\/span>\u201cWe have no king,<\/span><\/span>
\nfor we do not fear the Lord<\/span>;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and a king\u2014what could he do for us?\u201d<\/span><\/span>
\n4 <\/sup>They utter mere words;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>with empty oaths they make covenants;<\/span><\/span>
\nso judgment springs up like poisonous weeds<\/span>
\n    <\/span>in the furrows of the field.<\/span><\/span>
\n5 <\/sup>The inhabitants of Samaria tremble<\/span>
\n    <\/span>for the calf of Beth-aven.<\/span><\/span>
\nIts people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests\u2014<\/span>
\n    <\/span>those who rejoiced over it and over its glory\u2014<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>for it has departed from them.<\/span><\/span>
\n6 <\/sup>The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria<\/span>
\n    <\/span>as tribute to the great king.<\/span><\/span>
\nEphraim shall be put to shame,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

7 <\/sup>Samaria’s king shall perish<\/span>
\n    <\/span>like a twig on the face of the waters.<\/span><\/span>
\n8 <\/sup>The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>shall be destroyed.<\/span><\/span>
\nThorn and thistle shall grow up<\/span>
\n    <\/span>on their altars,<\/span><\/span>
\nand they shall say to the mountains, \u201cCover us,\u201d<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and to the hills, \u201cFall on us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

9 <\/sup>From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>there they have continued.<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>Shall not the war against the unjust overtake them in Gibeah?<\/span><\/span>
\n10 <\/sup>When I please, I will discipline them,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and nations shall be gathered against them<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>when they are bound up for their double iniquity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

11 <\/sup>Ephraim was a trained calf<\/span>
\n    <\/span>that loved to thresh,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>and I spared her fair neck;<\/span><\/span>
\nbut I will put Ephraim to the yoke;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>Judah must plow;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>Jacob must harrow for himself.<\/span><\/span>
\n12 <\/sup>Sow for yourselves righteousness;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>reap steadfast love;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>break up your fallow ground,<\/span><\/span>
\nfor it is the time to seek the Lord<\/span>,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

13 <\/sup>You have plowed iniquity;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>you have reaped injustice;<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>you have eaten the fruit of lies.<\/span><\/span>
\nBecause you have trusted in your own way<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and in the multitude of your warriors,<\/span><\/span>
\n14 <\/sup>therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,<\/span><\/span>
\nas Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;<\/span>
\n    <\/span>mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.<\/span><\/span>
\n15 <\/sup>Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>because of your great evil.<\/span><\/span>
\nAt dawn the king of Israel<\/span>
\n    <\/span>shall be utterly cut off.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
