Isaiah 40:1-11  (English Standard Version)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Comfort for God’s People<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

40 <\/span>Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.<\/span><\/span>
\n2 <\/sup>Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>and cry to her<\/span><\/span>
\nthat her warfare is ended,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>that her iniquity is pardoned,<\/span><\/span>
\nthat she has received from the Lord<\/span>‘s hand<\/span>
\n    <\/span>double for all her sins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

3 <\/sup>A voice cries:<\/span>
\n\u201cIn the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord<\/span>;<\/span>

\n    <\/span>and every mountain and hill be made low;<\/span><\/span>

\nAll flesh is grass,<\/span>

John the Baptist Prepares the Way<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

1 <\/span>The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

2 <\/sup>As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBehold, I send my messenger before your face,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>who will prepare your way,<\/span><\/span>
\n3 <\/sup>the voice of one crying in the wilderness:<\/span>
\n    <\/span>\u2018Prepare the way of the Lord,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>make his paths straight,\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

4 <\/sup>John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.<\/span> 5 <\/sup>And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.<\/span> 6 <\/sup>Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.<\/span> 7 <\/sup>And he preached, saying, \u201cAfter me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.<\/span> 8 <\/sup>I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
