Matthew 4:1-11  (English Standard Version)<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Temptation of Jesus<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/span>Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.<\/span> 2 <\/sup>And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.<\/span> 3 <\/sup>And the tempter came and said to him, \u201cIf you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.\u201d<\/span> 4 <\/sup>But he answered, \u201cIt is written,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201c\u2018Man shall not live by bread alone,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple<\/span> 6 <\/sup>and said to him, \u201cIf you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018He will command his angels concerning you,\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

and<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201c\u2018On their hands they will bear you up,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>lest you strike your foot against a stone.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>Jesus said to him, \u201cAgain it is written, \u2018You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span> 8 <\/sup>Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.<\/span> 9 <\/sup>And he said to him, \u201cAll these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.\u201d<\/span> 10 <\/sup>Then Jesus said to him, \u201cBe gone, Satan! For it is written,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201c\u2018You shall worship the Lord your God<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>and him only shall you serve.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/sup>Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
