John the Baptist Prepares the Way<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/span>The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 <\/sup>As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBehold, I send my messenger before your face,<\/span>
\n    <\/span>who will prepare your way,<\/span><\/span>
\n3 <\/sup>the voice of one crying in the wilderness:<\/span>
\n    <\/span>\u2018Prepare the way of the Lord,<\/span><\/span>
\n    <\/span>make his paths straight,\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

4 <\/sup>John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism ofrepentance for the forgiveness of sins.<\/span> 5 <\/sup>And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.<\/span> 6 <\/sup>Now John was clothed with camel’s hair andwore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.<\/span> 7 <\/sup>And he preached, saying, \u201cAfter me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.<\/span> 8 <\/sup>I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.<\/span> 10 <\/sup>And when he came up out of the water, immediately he sawthe heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.<\/span>11 <\/sup>And a voice came from heaven, \u201cYou are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Temptation of Jesus<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/sup>The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.<\/span> 13 <\/sup>And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
