Acts 6:2-5: \u201cNow at this time while the disciples were increasing in number<\/em>, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews<\/em> against the native<\/em> Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food<\/em>. 2 <\/sup>So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, \u201cIt is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. 3 <\/sup>Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. 4 <\/sup>But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.\u201d 5 <\/sup>The statement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen,\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. IF A CHURCH IS IN _ _ _ _ _  AS FAR AS ELDERS IS CONCERNED, THEN DEACONS CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND FUNCTION IN THEIR  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Definition: \u201cServant.\u201d \u201cCare for the physical and logistical needs of the church so that the Elders can concentrate on their primary calling.\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. They help the Pastor and Elders do the ministry.<\/li>\n
  4. SOME OF THE _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1 Tim. 3:8-13:  8 <\/sup>Deacons likewise must be<\/em> men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted <\/strong><\/p>\n

    to much wine or fond of sordid gain, 9 <\/sup>but<\/em> holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear <\/strong><\/p>\n

    conscience. 10 <\/sup>These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. 11 <\/sup>Women must<\/em> likewise be<\/em> dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. 12 <\/sup>Deacons must be husbands of only<\/em> one wife, and<\/em> good managers of their<\/em> children and their own households. 13 <\/sup>For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Dignified \u2013 GR. \u201cHonorable, respectable, esteemed, worthy.\u201d (v. 8)<\/li>\n
    2. Not double-tongued, \u201cto say one thing to certain people but something else to others.\u201d<\/li>\n
    3. Sound in faith and life \u2013 1. Trained in doctrine. 2. Practices it. 3. Supports church programs. (v. 9)<\/li>\n
    4. Tested \u2013 No hasty appointments. (v. 10)<\/li>\n
    5. Godly spouse \u2013 1. Team effort. 2. Not involved in division or gossip (v. 11).<\/li>\n
    6. THE _ _ _ _ OF DEACONS:<\/strong><\/li>\n
    7. Service oriented as opposed to ministry focus of Pastor and Elders (Acts 6).<\/li>\n
    8. Practical Areas:<\/li>\n
    9. Facilities, basic management, supplies, upkeep, etc.<\/li>\n
    10. Benevolence (Acts 6).<\/li>\n
    11. Finances, day to day budget, (overseen by Elders and congregation).<\/li>\n
    12. Ushers, bulletins, communion preparation, set up, recovery; greeters, etc.<\/li>\n
    13. Logistics. Think and look at what we do. How can we do it better?<\/li>\n
    14. Possibilities and Ideas:<\/li>\n
    15. Deacon Committees, e.g.,:<\/li>\n
    16. Building Committee managed by an appointed deacon.<\/li>\n
    17. Supply Deacon.<\/li>\n
    18. Greeting and\/or Usher Deacon, who manages this.<\/li>\n
    19. Elder Committees (Comparison\/Contrast):<\/li>\n
    20. Visitation Elder. (identifies and supports visitation program).<\/li>\n
    21. Evangelism Elder. (Explores church growth concepts and interfaces with<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Pastor and other Elders for ideas and implementation)<\/p>\n

      1. Children\u2019s Ministry & Outreach Elder.<\/li>\n
      2. Fellowship Ministry.<\/li>\n
      3. Worship Service Ideas.<\/li>\n
      4. Notice the difference between the service oriented Deacon role and ministry oriented Elder role.<\/li>\n
      5. THE _ _ _ _ _ _ WERE FIRST IN THE N. T. CHURCHES.<\/strong><\/li>\n
      6. Apostles (Ministry gifted leaders established churches and appointed Elders).<\/li>\n
      7. Later, the congregation, with direction and guidance from the Elders, identify called and capable deacons. Elders confirm and appoint them.<\/li>\n
      8. Their primary function is service oriented (Logistical). Deacons DO IT!!!<\/li>\n
      9. The Elders handled the spiritual matters and Ministry.<\/li>\n
      10. Result: a continuous flow of ministry without the perpetual obligation of filling positions with sometimes uncommitted or uncalled individuals.<\/li>\n
      11. God is not looking for perfect leaders. But He is calling imperfect individuals to perfect His Church.<\/li>\n
      12. He is giving some the desire to service His Church and His world as Elders and Deacons.<\/li>\n
      13. Our responsibility is to identify them and appoint them.<\/li>\n
      14. He blesses us when we align ourselves with His ways. \n
