The Ministry of Elders, Part One<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ephesians 4:7-16  (New American Standard Bible)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

7 <\/sup>But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ\u2019s gift.<\/span> 8 <\/sup>Therefore it says,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen He ascended on high<\/span>,<\/span>
\n He<\/span> led captive a host of captives<\/span>,<\/span>
\n And He gave gifts to men<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>(Now this expression<\/i>, \u201cHe ascended,\u201d what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?<\/span> 10 <\/sup>He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)<\/span> 11 <\/sup>And He gave some as<\/i> apostles, and some as<\/i> prophets, and some as<\/i> evangelists, and some as<\/i> pastors and teachers,<\/span> 12 <\/sup>for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;<\/span> 13 <\/sup>until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.<\/span> 14 <\/sup>As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;<\/span> 15 <\/sup>but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects<\/i> into Him who is the head, even<\/i> Christ,<\/span> 16 <\/sup>from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Cor. 12:27-28: <\/strong>27 <\/sup>Now you are Christ\u2019s body, and individually members of it. 28 <\/sup>And God has appointed<\/strong> in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various<\/em> kinds of tongues.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acts 20:17-18, 28:<\/strong>  \u201c17 <\/sup>From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. 18 <\/sup>And when they had come to him, he said to them, \u201cYou yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, \u2026 28 <\/sup>Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers<\/strong>, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titus 1:5, 7:<\/strong>  5 <\/sup>For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,… 7 <\/sup>For the overseer<\/strong> must be above reproach as God\u2019s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Peter 5:1-2:<\/strong>  Therefore, I exhort the elders among you<\/strong>, as your<\/em> fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2 <\/sup>shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of<\/em> God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Tim. 5:22: <\/strong> Do not lay hands upon anyone too<\/em> hastily<\/strong> and thereby share responsibility for<\/em> the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Tim. 4:14: <\/strong>  <\/sup>Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands<\/strong> by the presbytery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Tim. 1:6: <\/strong>  <\/sup>For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Tim. 3:4-5:  <\/strong>4 <\/sup>He must be<\/em> one who manages <\/strong>his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 <\/sup>(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rom. 12:6-8:  <\/strong>6 <\/sup>Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly<\/em>:<\/strong> if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 <\/sup>if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 <\/sup>or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Thess. 5:12:  <\/strong>But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you<\/strong>, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction,\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Tim. 5:17-18:  <\/strong>The elders who rule well<\/strong> are to be considered worthy of double honor,<\/strong> especially<\/strong> those who work hard at preaching and teaching<\/strong>. 18 <\/sup>For the Scripture says, \u201cYou shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,\u201d and \u201cThe laborer is worthy of his wages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Tim. 3:2:  <\/strong>An overseer,<\/strong> then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Cor. 16:15-16:  <\/strong>15 <\/sup>Now I urge you, brethren (you know the household of Stephanas, that they were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves for ministry<\/strong> to the saints), 16 <\/sup>that you also be in subjection to such men and to everyone who helps in the work and labors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

James 5:14:  <\/strong>14 <\/sup>Is anyone among you sick? Then<\/em> he must call for the elders of the church<\/strong> and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acts 14:23: <\/strong> <\/sup>When they had appointed elders<\/strong> for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
