November 8, 2015 &#8211; 24th Sunday after Pentecost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #de1223\"><em><strong>Worship is in the Parish Hall this Sunday due to renovations in the Sanctuary.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #808000\"><em><strong>&#8220;The Pattern of New Testament Leadership&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>The Ministry of Elders, Part One<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stpaulsmarietta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Elders.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stpaulsmarietta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Elders-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Elders\" class=\"wp-image-1763\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #808000\"><em><strong>Ephesians 4:7-16 &nbsp;(New American Standard Bible)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"en-NASB-29280\" class=\"text Eph-4-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7&nbsp;<\/sup>But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ\u2019s gift.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29281\" class=\"text Eph-4-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8&nbsp;<\/sup>Therefore it says,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Eph-4-8\" style=\"color: #000000\">\u201c<span class=\"small-caps\">When He ascended on high<\/span>,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"text Eph-4-8\" style=\"color: #000000\"> <span class=\"small-caps\">He<\/span> <span class=\"small-caps\">led captive a host of captives<\/span>,<\/span><br>\n<span class=\"text Eph-4-8\" style=\"color: #000000\"> <span class=\"small-caps\">And He gave gifts to men<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"first-line-none wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"en-NASB-29282\" class=\"text Eph-4-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9&nbsp;<\/sup>(Now this <i>expression<\/i>, \u201cHe ascended,\u201d what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29283\" class=\"text Eph-4-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10&nbsp;<\/sup>He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29284\" class=\"text Eph-4-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11&nbsp;<\/sup>And He gave some <i>as<\/i> apostles, and some <i>as<\/i> prophets, and some&nbsp;<i>as<\/i> evangelists, and some <i>as<\/i> pastors and teachers,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29285\" class=\"text Eph-4-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12&nbsp;<\/sup>for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29286\" class=\"text Eph-4-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13&nbsp;<\/sup>until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29287\" class=\"text Eph-4-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14&nbsp;<\/sup>As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29288\" class=\"text Eph-4-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15&nbsp;<\/sup>but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all <i>aspects<\/i> into Him who is the head, <i>even<\/i> Christ,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NASB-29289\" class=\"text Eph-4-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16&nbsp;<\/sup>from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading first-line-none\"><span style=\"color: #808000\"><em><strong>ELDERS AND OVERSEERS: &nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">(All References from NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Cor. 12:27-28: <\/strong><sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>Now you are Christ\u2019s body, and individually members of it. <sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>And God has <strong>appointed<\/strong> in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, <em>various<\/em> kinds of tongues.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Acts 20:17-18, 28:<\/strong>&nbsp; \u201c<sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. <sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>And when they had come to him, he said to them, \u201cYou yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, \u2026 <sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which <strong>the Holy Spirit has made you overseers<\/strong>, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Titus 1:5, 7:<\/strong>&nbsp; <sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,&#8230; <sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>For <strong>the overseer<\/strong> must be above reproach as God\u2019s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Peter 5:1-2:<\/strong>&nbsp; Therefore, I exhort <strong>the elders among you<\/strong>, as <em>your<\/em> fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, <sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to <em>the will of<\/em> God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Tim. 5:22: <\/strong>&nbsp;Do not lay hands upon anyone <strong><em>too<\/em> hastily<\/strong> and thereby share <em>responsibility for<\/em> the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Tim. 4:14: <\/strong>&nbsp;<sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the <strong>laying on of hands<\/strong> by the presbytery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Tim. 1:6: <\/strong>&nbsp;<sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the <strong>laying on of my hands<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #808000\"><em><strong>FUNCTIONS: &nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">(All References from NASB)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Tim. 3:4-5:&nbsp; <\/strong><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><em>He must be<\/em> one who <strong>manages <\/strong>his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity <sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Rom. 12:6-8:&nbsp; <\/strong><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>Since we have gifts that differ <strong>according to the grace given to us, <em>each of us is to exercise them accordingly<\/em>:<\/strong> if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; <sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; <sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Thess. 5:12:&nbsp; <\/strong>But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who <strong>diligently labor among you<\/strong>, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction,\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Tim. 5:17-18:&nbsp; <\/strong>The <strong>elders who rule well<\/strong> are to be considered worthy of <strong>double honor,<\/strong> <strong>especially<\/strong> those who <strong>work hard at preaching and teaching<\/strong>. <sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>For the Scripture says, \u201cYou shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,\u201d and \u201cThe laborer is worthy of his wages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Tim. 3:2:&nbsp; <\/strong>An <strong>overseer,<\/strong> then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>1 Cor. 16:15-16:&nbsp; <\/strong><sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>Now I urge you, brethren (you know the household of Stephanas, that they were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have <strong>devoted themselves for ministry<\/strong> to the saints), <sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>that you also be in subjection to such men and to everyone who helps in the work and labors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>James 5:14:&nbsp; <\/strong><sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Is anyone among you sick? <em>Then<\/em> <strong>he must call for the elders of the church<\/strong> and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Acts 14:23: <\/strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>When they had <strong>appointed elders<\/strong> for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #808000\"><em><strong>Sunday School:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> 10:00 \u2013 11:00 AM \u2013 in the Parish Hall Lower Level.
