7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: \u201cWhat did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
\nwho will prepare your way before you.\u2019
\n11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16 \u201cBut to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 \u201c\u2018We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
\nwe sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.\u2019
\n18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, \u2018He has a demon.\u2019 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, \u2018Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!\u2019 Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Rebellious Son<\/em>
\n18 \u201cIf a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, 19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, 20 and they shall say to the elders of his city, \u2018This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.\u2019 21 Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
