John 1  (English Standard Version)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Word Became Flesh<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1 <\/span>In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.<\/span> 2 <\/span><\/sup>He was in the beginning with God.<\/span> 3 <\/sup><\/span>All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.<\/span> 4 <\/sup><\/span>In him was life, and the life was the light of men.<\/span> 5 <\/sup><\/span>The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/span><\/sup>There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.<\/span> 7 <\/span><\/sup>He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.<\/span> 8 <\/sup><\/span>He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup><\/span>The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.<\/span> 10 <\/span><\/sup>He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.<\/span> 11 <\/span><\/sup>He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.<\/span> 12 <\/span><\/sup>But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,<\/span> 13 <\/span><\/sup>who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/span><\/sup>And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.<\/span> 15 <\/span><\/sup>(John bore witness about him, and cried out, \u201cThis was he of whom I said, \u2018He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.\u2019\u201d)<\/span> 16 <\/span><\/sup>For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.<\/span> 17 <\/span><\/sup>For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.<\/span> 18 <\/sup><\/span>No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Testimony of John the Baptist<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

19 <\/span><\/sup>And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/span> 20 <\/sup><\/span>He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, \u201cI am not the Christ.\u201d<\/span> 21 <\/span><\/sup>And they asked him, \u201cWhat then? Are you Elijah?\u201d He said, \u201cI am not.\u201d \u201cAre you the Prophet?\u201d And he answered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span> 22 <\/span><\/sup>So they said to him, \u201cWho are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?\u201d<\/span> 23 <\/span><\/sup>He said, \u201cI am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, \u2018Make straight the way of the Lord,\u2019 as the prophet Isaiah said.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

24 <\/span><\/sup>(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)<\/span> 25 <\/span><\/sup>They asked him, \u201cThen why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?\u201d<\/span> 26 <\/span><\/sup>John answered them, \u201cI baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,<\/span> 27 <\/span><\/sup>even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.\u201d<\/span> 28 <\/span><\/sup>These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behold, the Lamb of God<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

29 <\/span><\/sup>The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, \u201cBehold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!<\/span> 30 <\/span><\/sup>This is he of whom I said, \u2018After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.\u2019<\/span> 31 <\/span><\/sup>I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.\u201d<\/span> 32 <\/span><\/sup>And John bore witness: \u201cI saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.<\/span> 33 <\/span><\/sup>I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, \u2018He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.\u2019<\/span> 34 <\/span><\/sup>And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus Calls the First Disciples<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

35 <\/span><\/sup>The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,<\/span> 36 <\/span><\/sup>and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, \u201cBehold, the Lamb of God!\u201d<\/span> 37 <\/span><\/sup>The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.<\/span> 38 <\/span><\/sup>Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, \u201cWhat are you seeking?\u201d<\/span> And they said to him, \u201cRabbi\u201d (which means Teacher), \u201cwhere are you staying?\u201d<\/span> 39 <\/span><\/sup>He said to them, \u201cCome and you will see.\u201d<\/span> So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.<\/span> 40 <\/sup><\/span>One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.<\/span> 41 <\/span><\/sup>He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, \u201cWe have found the Messiah\u201d (which means Christ).<\/span> 42 <\/span><\/sup>He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, \u201cYou are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas\u201d<\/span> (which means Peter).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

43 <\/sup><\/span>The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, \u201cFollow me.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 44 <\/span><\/sup>Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.<\/span> 45 <\/span><\/sup>Philip found Nathanael and said to him, \u201cWe have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.\u201d<\/span> 46 <\/span><\/sup>Nathanael said to him, \u201cCan anything good come out of Nazareth?\u201d Philip said to him, \u201cCome and see.\u201d<\/span> 47 <\/span><\/sup>Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, \u201cBehold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!\u201d<\/span><\/span> 48 <\/span><\/sup>Nathanael said to him, \u201cHow do you know me?\u201d Jesus answered him, \u201cBefore Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 49 <\/span><\/sup>Nathanael answered him, \u201cRabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!\u201d<\/span> 50 <\/span><\/sup>Jesus answered him, \u201cBecause I said to you, \u2018I saw you under the fig tree,\u2019 do you believe? You will see greater things than these.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 51 <\/span><\/sup>And he said to him, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Choice of Life and Death<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

11 <\/span><\/sup>\u201cFor this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.<\/span> 12 <\/sup><\/span>It is not in heaven, that you should say, \u2018Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?\u2019<\/span> 13 <\/span><\/sup>Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, \u2018Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?\u2019<\/span> 14 <\/span><\/sup>But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/span><\/sup>\u201cSee, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.<\/span> 16 <\/span><\/sup>If you obey the commandments of the Lord<\/span> your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord<\/span> your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord<\/span> your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.<\/span> 17 <\/span><\/sup>But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them,<\/span> 18 <\/sup><\/span>I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess.<\/span> 19 <\/span><\/sup>I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
