Genesis 37:12-28  (English Standard Version)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

12 <\/span><\/sup>Now his brothers went to pasture their father’s flock near Shechem.<\/span> 13 <\/span><\/sup>And Israel said to Joseph, \u201cAre not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.\u201d And he said to him, \u201cHere I am.\u201d<\/span> 14 <\/span><\/sup>So he said to him, \u201cGo now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.\u201d So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.<\/span> 15 <\/span><\/sup>And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, \u201cWhat are you seeking?\u201d<\/span> 16 <\/span><\/sup>\u201cI am seeking my brothers,\u201d he said. \u201cTell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.\u201d<\/span> 17 <\/span><\/sup>And the man said, \u201cThey have gone away, for I heard them say, \u2018Let us go to Dothan.\u2019\u201d So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

18 <\/span><\/sup>They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him.<\/span> 19 <\/span><\/sup>They said to one another, \u201cHere comes this dreamer.<\/span> 20 <\/span><\/sup>Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.\u201d<\/span> 21 <\/span><\/sup>But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, \u201cLet us not take his life.\u201d<\/span> 22 <\/span><\/sup>And Reuben said to them, \u201cShed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him\u201d\u2014that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father.<\/span> 23 <\/span><\/sup>So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore.<\/span> 24 <\/span><\/sup>And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

25 <\/span><\/sup>Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt.<\/span> 26 <\/span><\/sup>Then Judah said to his brothers, \u201cWhat profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?<\/span> 27 <\/span><\/sup>Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.\u201d And his brothers listened to him.<\/span> 28 <\/span><\/sup>Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God’s Good Purposes<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

15 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, \u201cIt may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.\u201d<\/span> 16 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, \u201cYour father gave this command before he died:<\/span> 17 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>\u2018Say to Joseph, \u201cPlease forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.\u201d\u2019 And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.\u201d Joseph wept when they spoke to him.<\/span> 18 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, \u201cBehold, we are your servants.\u201d<\/span> 19 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>But Joseph said to them, \u201cDo not fear, for am I in the place of God?<\/span> 20 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.<\/span> 21 <\/span><\/strong><\/sup>So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.\u201d Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
