Sermon 10/20/2024: “Out Of Order”

Listen here: “Out Of Order

Isaiah 53:4-12; Hebrews 5:1-10

  • Abraham went with his father, Terah, to Canaan, but Terah died on the way.
  • It was then that God had told Abram to leave his country and kindred and go to a land that he would show him, and promised to make of him a great nation, bless him, make his name great, bless them that bless him, and curse them who curse him.
    • Abraham was either born in Ur or born on Terah’s journey to Canaan.
    • So, when God called Abraham to leave his country and kindred, God was calling Abraham to leave his family’s religion, the human sacrificing religion of Ur, the religion of Sin or Nanna.
  • So, later when God told Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac, Abraham had little compunction about that because he was familiar with it.
    • He had grown up in a human sacrificing religion.
    • God then stopped Abraham before the sacrifice of Isaac, and provided a substitute, a goat or lamb.

  • In the long history of this world God was in the process of changing the religion of humanity, changing the worship practices of the ancient world.
