Listen here: “Possessed

Amos 5:10-15; Mark 10:17-31

  • The prophets were critical of the established Temple leaders. The job of the prophets was to point out social problems, and social problems always had religious roots, religious origins.
  • In order to solve a problem, the first order of business is to correctly diagnose the problem.
    • A wrong diagnosis will result in an ineffective and potentially dangerous cure.
  • So Jesus told him that he lacked one thing.
    • Something had blinded this young man to the truth of his situation. He had not seen the reality of the human predicament. He was in denial of the extent, the degree, or the consequences of sin.
    • Something kept him from seeing this truth, and it was his wealth.
    • This young man was blinded by his wealth. He didn’t possess the wealth, his wealth possessed him.
