Listen Here: “Seeing What You Hear“
1 Samuel 3:1-10; John 1:43-51
- Samuel was Eli’s understudy, his protege. And the first thing that Samuel learned was that Eli was not faithful.
- That’s a hard lesson to learn. When someone you are supposed to look up to, or some institution, like your church or your government, that is supposed to engender your trust and support is proven to be unfaithful and untrustworthy, it is a bitter pill to swallow. It’s hard to believe, hard to accept.
- Our first response is disbelief. Surely that is not true. There must be some mistake, some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication.
- We don’t want to believe it because believing it upsets our entire world. Suddenly everything that we thought was true comes into question.
- Faithfulness happens in a lot of different ways, but the result is always the same. At some point, you just “get” Jesus. You understand Him, you trust Him, and you know that He understands you. He sees you and you see Him.
